Living at The Village?

While staying in The Village at the University of Leicester, you will also be part of your own hall community and become part of its unique 100-year history. Many of the accommodations in The Village date from Edwardian times (1901-1910) and were built by Leicester’s wealthy industrialists, creating these large, elegant houses which were subsequently bought or donated to the University. As the University grew, purpose-built accommodation was constructed on the grounds of these houses and incorporated into the diverse character of The Village, including in Gilbert Murray Hall.

Gilbert Murray and Stamford Hall

Gilbert Murray consists of a variety of accommodation options to suit you. Some of the largest Edwardian houses in The Village are located in Gilbert Murray Hall, including Shirley House (originally called Sorrento) and Clivedon House. Both offer the student house experience, with enough rooms to provide their own indoor communities. While the hall also offer a more close-knit experience in Fields, Bredon and Stoughton Leys houses, all located within a few seconds walk to Roger Bettles Sports Centre. As mentioned earlier, all these houses came with extensive grounds that enabled the university to grow over its 100 years. The sports centre was constructed in Fields, Bredon and Stoughton Leys grounds. Bowder Court and Southmeade Court are purpose built and situated just behind Clivedon House with their own courtyards to meet and relax in. All these accommodations come together to form Gilbert Murray Hall.

Gilbert Murray and Stamford Hall

As our second largest hall in The Village, Gilbert Murray may seem daunting in size, but guarantees the space you want to make your own. Even with Bowder Court and Southmeade Court, there's still plenty of green space around for outdoor studying and activities. Amenities are never far away, with The Village Reception just across the road in John Foster Hall and The Village Hub located a 30 seconds walk in Stamford Hall. Olive Banks is an IT Suite and Study Centre located next to Southmeade Court that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Here, you can do some quiet studying or printing, without having to travel to the library on campus. As the hall closest to the sports centre, it means you can be one of the first to take a dip in the pool or use the courts!
