The best way to tackle an interview
Yes, you really did get the interview.
You did good, well done! Getting an interview is amazing so give yourself a pat on the back. Now you’ve got to prepare your answers and do your research on the company.
Try to remain calm
Interviews can be a bit daunting and nerve-wracking, but if you have prepared, you will know what to talk about and how to answer the questions. You could even practice some breathing techniques beforehand.
The way you handle an interview is going to depend on several things:
The kind of interview you have:
Some companies do telephone interviews before you get to face to face interviews. These sometimes require a different approach from a face-to-face interview. Remember, the interviewer cannot see you, so try to speak clear to get all of your points and personality across.
Some recruiters favour video interviews. Pick a place with good lighting, acoustics and reception, you don't want to lose connection 5 minutes in!
Is this a one to one interview, paired interview or group interview?
While all interviews will require the same skills to be shown in one type of interview, you might need to showcase some skills more than others.
For example, in a paired interview you will need to show patience and good manners – listening to the other interviewee quietly, showing you’re interested in what they say even though you’re rivals competing for the same position.
What’s the company like?
Whatever job you are applying for... research the company.
The company might be into informal interviews – maybe they’re more into finding out more about you as a person than about your qualifications right now because they already have your CV… or maybe they’re the formal types – you want to be ready to give work/education examples of your experience using the STAR method (Situation, Target, Action, Result).
Websites like Indeed and Glassdoor are particularly good for finding out things about the company, asking others questions about the company and the interview process and just finding out things you might need to know.
My top tips for any interview:
- Have a look at the type of questions have they asked previous candidates.
- Make sure you know what the company are about.
- Know what you’ve applied for – be able to discuss the role that you’ve applied for and if you can’t then ask questions about it.
- Be ready early - 10 minutes is the rule.
- Look the part - whatever the part is!
- Write down answers to some of the questions you think you might get.
