At Sheffield Hallam there are so many opportunities available and one of these is the amount of sport on offer!
Because of the size of sports societies, there are lots of different leagues you can join, including social leagues which are non-competitive. When I started uni, I joined the English society netball team and it’s the only society I have kept up since Freshers Week and one of the best things I've done at uni!
Here are 4 reasons why joining a sports team has made my experience at Sheffield Hallam amazing:
- It’s a fresh start.
If you weren’t sporty before going to uni, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t enjoy a sport. I wasn't classed as sporty in school because I was never very competitive, but at uni my friends see me as sporty! All because I joined a social sport team.
- You could find your hidden talent or passion.
There are so many different types of sport on offer from netball and lacrosse to tennis and dance! With every sport, there are different leagues and levels of ability. At the social league level, there are different systems depending on your university.
- Get fit.
Before I went to Sheffield Hallam I just didn't enjoy exercise. I hated being on my own in a gym and was always intimidated by team sport, but when you find a team that is supportive and encouraging, you don’t even realise you’re exercising. I definitely don’t count down the minutes of a netball match like I would on a treadmill...
- Make some amazing friends.
I have met some amazing friends through uni and you get to meet people across different year groups who you'd never have met otherwise. When you’ve built up teamwork by playing together every week and know you have that thing in common, it’s so nice to chat to so many different types of people!
Joining a social league is a brilliant way to gain confidence and some great friends! So, if you’re wanting to join a team who competes against other universities, it’s never too late to join a sports society, anyone can join at any time...
